No Rules . . .Just Right!

"There are no rules around here - we are trying to accomplish something!"

I recently read this quote by Thomas Edison, the famous inventor, and it resonated with my spirit.  I just love that kind of thinking and I desire for that to be an ethos issue within Radius Church.  We can so easily take our eyes off the ball by paying too much attention to 'the rules', making sure we dot all of our i's and cross all of our t's.  But if we want to launch out and pursue a bold, God-sized vision, we will have let some i's go undotted and some t's uncrossed.  That is the nature of the beast.  Any and every great move of God was always marred by some flaws, irregularities and even some heresies, yet it was a move of God nonetheless.  When God chooses to move, He always does it through imperfect and fallible men and therefore the Divine movement has ugly human warts on it.  This unfortunate reality has often caused followers of Jesus to pursue movements of God that have to be absolutely pure and theologically flawless (according to our definition of purity).  However, this type of pursuit generally leads to a theologically pure death, not a great move of God.  As the mountain preacher Vance Havner used to say, "You can be as straight as a gun barrell, and just as empty."

So as we go forward, let's keep this great quote in mind.  Of course there are rules that Jesus laid down as a path for us to follow, but keeping the rules is not the goal!  The goal is to do whatever it takes for as many people as possible to see Jesus as He really is and choose to honor Him with their lives by loving God and loving their neighbor.
