Small Groups Doin' Work!!

Stories from the streets . . . Radius Church has approximately 30 small groups that meet throughout the week to make sure that we are all moving forward in our spiritual lives.  We believe that you move forward by loving God and loving others and we want to always do this in tangible ways.  Therefore, each small group has been given a $500 grant from our general offerings.  Their instructions were clear and simple - pray together as a group and ask Jesus how He would have you invest His money in your radius.  Maybe you help a single mom with bills, or maybe you throw a party and invite all of your friends as Matthew did, or perhaps you invest in another local church that is getting it done in our area.  There are absolutely no limits other than God's limits.  Below you will find the stories of our 30 missionary teams . . .

A Mother's Devotion

The Pinholster Small Group was recently blessed by a single mother, Noshelle, and her four special-needs children. With the majority of Noshelle’s time dedicated to attending to the children’s needs and typical parenting responsibilities, she is unable to pursue full time employment and therefore has considerable financial needs.

Our small group decided to provide both a monetary and a grocery gift to assist meeting some of need during the holidays. With the unique couponing talents of one of the members of our small group, $250 resulted in about $400 worth of groceries.  This was coupled with a $250 cash gift.  On December 20th, we met with Noshelle and three of the children Ziporia (age 8), Rishaud (age 13), and Tahaji (age 6) for a time of fellowship.  What we experienced was a mother’s unwavering devotion to her children and a strong faith in God. The children were beautiful, very well mannered and welcomed us into their home.  After 40 minutes of visiting in the living room and sharing our lives, we began bringing in groceries.  Noshelle was overwhelmed to the point of tears as her kitchen was quickly filled with every thing from turkey to toothpaste. She confessed that this was an answer to her prayer as she surveyed the stacks of bags all around the kitchen. It was a joyous occasion for us all.  Noshelle requested that we keep her and the family in our prayers, so we took that opportunity to pray together in the kitchen.  Noshelle thanked God and requested that we thank all those involved with this ministry at Radius.  That afternoon, we left a very excited family, but as the sun set we knew that we had been equally blessed by a mother’s devotion to her children.

The "Riches to Rags" are Redeemed by God

It's so cool how God redeems our time. Nathan and I spent a good bit of time in a terrifically difficult financial situation; fortunately, we had family that helped us stay afloat (or we would've been a 2008 statistic). However, this year, God appears to be bringing us onto the other side of things. And out of this is born an idea for a way to serve and give back right here in Columbia. What a way to make something beautiful out of something beautiful out of something that literally seemed like a pile of ashes for our family.

One thing we have noticed, over and over again, is that everyone's life seems to have been altered a little or a lot in the economic downturn. We know personally business owners who are not paying themselves, and more folks than we can count that have been laid off. It seems that, very few are immune to the effects of this economy.

So- in comes "The Food Boutique." What is it? It is an "updated" food pantry for 2010- a year in which many who have never had to ask for help are now looking at empty wallets before the month's end. These are the "Riches to Rags" folks. Maybe they haven't come from affluence, however, keep in mind that even "middle class" in the United States would be considered affluence in most parts of the world. The name "Food Boutique" is a little tongue-in-cheek, but literally it refers to the small size and personalized nature of the ministry.

How will it work? A core group of folks is getting together to figure out the logistics, but, here is what we know so far:

  • It will be personalized and specialized.  This is not a "one size fits all" entity, dishing out the same thing to everyone. The desire is to provide loose guidelines, depending on family size, and nutritional needs. For example, say a family member is diabetic. Likely we will not send them home with a 5 lb bag of sugar. Even more specifically, imagine if you had been losing weight and feeling better (important when one is under stress!)- and all of the sudden unable to purchase much fresh produce or dietetic foods. This is where the Food Boutique would seek to fill a need, focusing on providing foods that are in-line with what you are used to consuming. This will not only serve the client well but also reduce food wastage.
  • It will start out as a "referral-based" ministry. This means that all one needs to do is call or email and an appointment will be set to meet the need at hand.
  • It will utilize the "Extreme Couponing" method as a starting point for not only filling a one-time need, but enabling the family to set out on a course for providing for themselves. The structure will look like this: 1st visit- Be blessed. 2nd visit- Learn Exteme Couponing method. 3rd visit- small amount of "sweat equity" provided in return for the food. In this way, our hope is the The Food Boutique will have a self-replinishing component as well. Additionally, food donations will come primarily by encouraging those who are already Extreme Couponing to share any excess with others (without them having to find someone to give 8 tubes of toothpaste to!).
  •  Currently has acquired a temporary location on West Beltline Blvd in Columbia. The initial idea for expansion is not based on having one location growing larger, rather, creating a duplicatable process which can be replicated in other areas of town, making it convenient for the families in need.

Josephine House - Peru

The Mom's small group that meets on Monday mornings decided to donate our $500 to the Josephine House in Peru.  The Josephine House is an orphanage in Peru that was founded recently by Keith and Ruth Powlison.  They are Holly Anderson's parents.  They are taking in children that have been put to work begging on the streets for their mom and or parents, children with disabilities, and children that will just be there temporarily while their parents can't meet their needs.  The stories are quite touching and heartbreaking and you can read them on their website at www.josephinehouse.org. We thought it was quite fitting that a group of mom's donate money to help children without a mom.  Keith and Ruth have taken on quite a task with much love for these children.  We did not want to just send money, we wanted to be personal in our giving, so a few of us wrote letters of encouragement to the Powlisons for Holly to send to them in Peru.

Rebuilding a Family

Our small group consists of 5 guys.  Three of us are from Radius, one is a subcontractor and friend of mine and the fifth is his employee Chris.  We have been praying and considering how to use the $500 to bless someone in need and it was a little frustrating for each of us that we could not recognize that opportunity.  One day in our small group I posed the question concerning our marriages and relationships with the women in our lives.  I say that because Chris recently came to know the Lord and prior to that he had two children out of wedlock with his girlfriend.  They were split up for a long while but when he quit a party lifestyle and put his focus on the cross he concluded that he must bring that family back together.  He now lives with his girlfriend and they are working hard to come to terms with their situation, focus on Jesus as their Lord and create a family that is built on that same foundation.

When the question was asked about how each of us was doing with our partners Chris told us that it was getting better but they were on such a tight budget that it was difficult for them to spend time alone on dates or to just work on their relationship.  He was not seeking empathy or complaining but was just stating the facts about his situation.  He quoted that "It is hard to spend time walking the dam with her when it is raining every day.".

We spoke outside of Chris and decided that we should help Chris is his focus to build a relationship with his girlfriend and restore this family.  We could not do much but we surely could help by granting him some dates.  We purchased $250 worth of gift cards and gave them to Chris and asked him to spend time with her and focus on each other.  It was a blessing to be a part of helping a marriage along versus just watching it struggle.  One last request was that he take $50 of those gift certificates and grant it to someone he knows that needs a blessing as well.

Two Young Parents, Two Sick Kids

Our small group began praying for a family in Florida going through a really tough time. A group member brought to our attention this family with whom his pastor had been lifelong friends.

Typical family: Mom, Dad, and 4 kids under the age of ten. Nearly 3 months ago, the youngest child (Joseph) was born. After getting him home, the parents noticed that he was not interacting in a normal way. They returned to the hospital to have a series of tests performed. One of the tests showed that Joseph was born without the P-53 gene, which destroys rogue cells and keeps them from multiplying. This means Joseph is unable to fight off cancer. The child was in the hospital for nearly 8 weeks before being released.

The family of 6 was together for nearly 1 week when their next to youngest child (Adam, 2 years old) had to be rushed to the emergency room. A series of tests showed that he was in complete liver failure and he was eventually diagnosed with Reye's Disease. He went to No.1 on the organ donor list that day and was transferred to Gainesville University Hospital. Three days later he was on a helicopter bound for Miami to receive the liver transplant. The child is currently doing well, but has to stay in Miami (4 hours away from home) to monitor his progress.

Neither parent is currently working while they struggle to balance staying at home with 3 of their kids and alternating staying with the 2 year old in Miami. Thankfully, the McDonald's House charity is housing Adam and one of the parents every night, for the cost of only $1 per night.

This family has gone through such a terrible ordeal. We just want them to know that God works in mysterious ways and that His people are generous. Our group's $500 was given to them to use however they need it.
UPDATE: This past Sunday (Dec 6) we found out the following. This is so cool:
As we all know the family has been spending a lot of time in Miami in dealing with the 2-year old's health condition and him being monitored for his new kidney.  Well during their time down there they have been using a credit card to pay for all of their needs.  Apparently someone stole their credit information and began running up charges on their card.  So the credit company froze the account, while the account was canceled to issue them a new card.  When they returned home, the $500 check was in their mailbox waiting for them.  It was able to pay for all their bills that week while they awaited their new credit card.  So the timing was PERFECT.  Just an amazing story of how God works, and just how perfect His timing is.
